Local sports camps immersed in French NORTH SHORE SUMMER sports camps will be taking on a certain savoir-faire this summer as French immersion coaching is in- troduced to the 17th annual All- Star Basketball Camp. “We are the first to have this type of program,’’ said camp or- ganizer Dan Miscisco. ‘‘The French immersion instructors will have outstanding coaches, but proficient, of course, in the French language.” The immersion camps, and boys’ volleyball camp, are new additions to the already Jarge number of sports camps being of- fered by Miscisco. Since its inception over 17 years ago 10,000 boys and girls have at- tended Miscisco’s camps on the North Shore. SKILLS DRILLED “At the beginning I primarily drilled the skills,’’ said Miscisco. **However now the camps have thre purposes — skill develop- ment, enjoyment and motivation. Participants must go home excited everyday. “Recognition and confidence are big components of the pro- gram. It is not a babysitting ser- vice, it is a place where kids learn how to achieve success.”” Miscisco played professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardi- nals before starting his basketball and volleyba!l coaching career that has spanned 20 years. The camps operate at a number of West Vancouver and North Vancouver High Schools in July and August. THREE SESSIONS All his camps are offered on a weekly basis in three sessions: Rookies (grades 6-8); Juniors (grades 9-10); and Seniors (grades 11-12). Co-ed French immersion camps are offered for children in grades 6 through 9. Weekly sessions cost $60. Each camp goes from Monday to Friday for three-and-a-half hours a day. Over the 17 years, Miscisco has had many outstanding guest coaches including Ken and Kathy Shields from the University of Victoria’s highly successful) basketball program. ENERGETIC INSTRUCTORS “The present staff is comprised of energetic and successful North Shore instructors including Bruce Bourdon, Ernie Oei, Peter Ther- rien and Ray Marshall,’’ said Miscisco referring to the basketball program. The volleybali camps are coor- dinated by Wayne Desjardins, who coaches at Sentinel Secondary. .*‘Desjardin is a terrific clinician who stresses sound skill develop- ment,”’ Miscisco said.
