SWALLOW FALSE PRIDE U.S. un ion only hope for Canadian freedom Dear Editor: Regarding Jack Ammon’s Letter to the Editor of May <. First I would like to correct some of the statements made in his letter. 1) Mr. Ammor states that the unemployment rate is higher in California than in Canada. In reat ity the B.C, rate of unemployment is 100 per cent greater than the American and 50 per cent greater than Washington state. Mr. Ammon also is concerned about the high crime rate in the U.S B.C. has an overall crime rate 10 per cent greater than the state of Washinsiou. His fears that our crime rate would increase are un- founded. Furthermore, Mr. Ammon states that English is seldom spoken (1 assume in parts of Los Angeles). I can guarantee that there are parts of Canada where English is seldom spoken. In addition I’m sure he can find areas in Vancouver where white people are the minority. Mr. Ammon apparently thinks that the future is brighter in Canada. Does he realize that Canada’s per capita national debt and percentage of the gross na- tional product to pay that debt is almost twice the American? How long does he think we'll be able ta maintain our present level of social services with our horrendous debt and tax burden’? I agree with Mr. Ammon that money isn’t everything. The major issue is freedom. Canadians are losing their freedom and don't care or aren't aware of it. Did Canadian soldiers World War H so that: fight “Government officials can decide what books can be read or im- ported into Canada? Over 1,500 books are banned from importa- tion by customs. In tny opinion, our only hope for increased freedom and pro- sperily is for the Canadian people to swallow their false sense of pride and become part of the American union. The American constitution and system is our best guarantee for increased freedom and to escape the straight-jacket of the Canadian constitution. Albert A.
