ALFRED Dunhill of Duke Street, London, have designed their winter collection around one of the great traditions of the English zgen- try - the Country House Weckend. This is the backdrop for the winter fashion statement collec- tively referred to as The Windsor Look. In the 1930s large country houses close to London would become the centre of activity for the privileged classes. After a week of theatre-going, dining at the Club and dancing late into the night at expensive nightclubs, the gentry would leave London by train or motorcar and head for the delights of a weekend in the country. WEEKEND PARTIES Hostesses would compete with each other to throw the best weekend parties and it was impor- tant that guest lists were carefully planned to include a selection of the ‘right’ people, drawn from the ruling circles of the country - poli- tics, law, finance, the Foreign Of- fice, the Armed Services and, of course, the theatre. The weekend would involve many fashionable activities - shooting would be arranged for the gentlemen, bridge after dinner and some dancing to a wind-up record player. Meals were elaborate and plen- tiful and the day began with hearty English breakfast - kedgeree, bacon, eggs, kippers, toast and marmalade. . CLOTHES IMPORTANT Clothes were vitally important - each occasion demanded the cor- rect dress. Gentlemen would put aside their Saville Row suits for more casual Norfolk jackets, Fair Isle sweaters and stout brogues, but dress was still formal for din- ner. The Duke of Windsor was an acknowledged leader of fashion by setting new trends and heralding an era when comfort and conve- nience became, for the first time, major considerations in the design of men’s fashion.
