Pat Furlong opened the scoring for Drillers in the first period. Jerry Sarich tied it early in the second on a powerplay. Drillers had excellent scoring chances in the period, but were con- tinually robbed by Swint. Bruce’ Simpson rifled the puck over Keith Gibson's shoulder for the winner on another ‘Crows’ powerplay. In ‘other action the Firefighters overcame a stubborn Warriors team to post a 4-3 victory with two late goals.” -. After Ken Francis tied the game froma scramble in front of the Warrior net, Mitchison gave his team the lead for the third time in the game with four minutes left. The lead was short-lived, however, as Hempeis netted his second ona solo effort a minute and 4 half later. Murray Chatwin notched the win- ner in the final minutes. The Canadians meanwhile outlasted the stubborn Old Buzzards for a 5-4 victory. The win virtually assured the Canadians first place i in the standings. Rick Poliquin, who was flying all night, scored twice early in the first, then, with Don Ehl, set up linemate Dean Larivee, and the Canadians had a commanding 3-0 lead. Quick goals early in the second by Doug Ireland and Colin Wykes brought Buzzards within one, but half a minute after Wykes’ goal, Jim Tapp knocked in. a rebound to restore two-goal Canadian lead. Ireland notched his second on'a . bullet drive from the'slot later in the period. Midway through the third, Gary Young tied the game taking Howie Carty’s pass off froma faceoff. With a minute and a half left, Tom Pike blasted a screened shot past Keith Major on a solo rush for the Canadians’ triumph. Scoring leader Fred Baines of Firefighters was held off the scoreboard, but with 25 points, maintains a three-point margin over teammate Ken Francis. Terry Anderson of Old Crows leads in goals with 15. Garry Halls remains top goaltender with a 3.09 average. Guy Robinson of Drillers took over as the penalty leader with 24 minutes. : . WLTEA Ps.
