(Eric Eggertson photo) PNE kicks off with parade The 67th Annual Pacific National Exhibition will be opened by the annual parade this Saturday, August 22. This year a total of 93 entries include everything from. military groups and Mmajorettes to 17 marching bands, nearly 50 clowns and more than 50 floats, with some entries coming from as far away as Reno, Nevada. The parade begins at Georgia and Thurlow Streets at 10 a.m., following a route down Burrard Street to Hastings Street and then along Hastings Street to the PNE grounds. The procession will be lead by Canadian Forces Naden Band. PNE president Erwin Swangard and his wife Doris follow the military” unit leading the WIP section which this year salutes sports at the PNE. Honourary Parade Marshalls this year will be Ivan Hlinka and Jin Bubla, the two Czechoslovakian players recently acquired by the Vancouver Canucks, in addition to members of the Vancouver Whitecaps. the B.C. Lions, the B.C. Jockey Club and amateur sports representatives. The first of the floats will be the awerd winning 1981. PNE Float, a train of five cars more than 50-feet long. Riding on the float will be Miss PNE 1981, 18-year-old Tracy Wheeler of North Vancouver. The cars will be pulled by a_ colorful animated locomotive engine with bubbles pouring out of the smokestack. Twenty-six former Miss PNE's will ride the Miss PNE Queens’ Train float, a first in the fair’s history. One .of the most exciting entries is the Chinese Dragon, a 200foot long ceremonial dragon’ which must be manned by 200 people, 50 people to manoeuvre the dragon with the others continually relieving those carrying the dragon.
