The North Shore was well represented at the 1981 national Boy Scout Jamboree, with 201 scouts, venturers and leaders from the three North Shore districts attending the Alberta event. The jamboree, the first ever in Western Canada, was held in Kananaskis Country, from July | to 10, and drew more than 23,000 scouts, leaders and volunteers from across the country, and from several other nations. Jamborees, for many years a part of scouting tradition, are large camps, organized on a regional, national or. international basis. They give scouts the opportunity to visit new places and meet fellow scouts from across the country and around = the world. Kanakaskis is located on the east side of the Rockies, between Banff and Calgary. During the ten day jamboree the 7,500 tent city was (albeit temporarily) the eighth largest community in Alberta. Representing the North Shore at the jamboree were 54 scouts, 14 venturers and 10 leaders from West Vancouver; 34 scouts and six if you would like to advertise on this page leaders from’ - Capilano District (North Vancouver west of Lonsdale); and from Seymour District (east of Lonsdale) there were 55 scouts, 16 venturers and 12 leaders. The North Shore scouts, venturers and leaders eagerly awaited the jam- boree and were not disappointed, says Elliott Trueman, a North Van scout leader. The jamboree cost about $425 per boy for the local contingent, and the scouts raised money through Manure sales, car washes and bottle drives.
