And when an old mansion has been revived, refurbished and opens its door to visitors, then confirmed house prowlers can settle down to enjoy themselves. In Victoria, some lovely old homes have taken a new . lease on life. The grandest of these is the William J. Pendray house at 309 Belleville Street, just west of the Parliament Buildings. Pendray came to B.C. in the gold rush days, tried his luck at the diggings and finally settled down in C4-Sunday News, July 13, 1980 Victoria to manufacture paint. His British American Paint Company tater became known as Bapco Paint — a trade name still familiar to Western Canadians. WHIMSICAL SHAPES He built his house with a pepper-shaker tower, wide verandahs and frescoed ceilings, and pruned his garden shrubs into whinm- sical shapes which have delighted passing children ever since. Back in 1863, when the Carr home was built, it stood amid oak trees and wild flowers. The park- like surroundings vanished long ago and the house itself was barely saved from the wreckers. This restored building at 1117 Wharf Street dates from the days of old Fort Victoria. Out along Fort Street, where many of the city’s antique shops are located, ts the stately white house built for Captain Henry Bailey Ella. He was a pilot aboard the Hudson's Bay Company ships back in 1862. OLD DEED North on Cook Street, west on Hillside and out the Gorge Road, is the Dingle House Restaurant. But you'll have to look carefully. At 137 Gorge Road East, the Dingle House is all but in- visible behind tall new motel buildings. The house was built in 1885, but the story of the property goes back to 1852.
