film Wednesday, December 26, 1990 - North Shore News - 23 Scissorhands film is ‘wonderful’ Edward Scissorhands *°*Y%, (20th Century Fox) Rated Mature (at the Park & Tilford, Granville, Clearbrook, Scott 72, and Coqualeam cinemas). TIM BELL film review dward Scissorhands is what you might call a sharp dresser. Built as an automaton, Edward Johnny Depp) was left with scissors for hands when his creator (Vincent Price) died. So he has lived, all alone, in a gloomy ruin overlooking the generic suburb that stretches from his castle gate. Until one day, Avon Lady Peg Bogg (Dianne Wiest) comes a‘call- ing. The sight of a pale young man in leather and chains, with razor sharp hands brings out her mater- nal instincts (well, OK, after the in- itial panic subsides). So, for the first time in his mechanical life, Edward ventures outside his secluded world. : The Bogg’s secret visitor natural- ly draws the attention of curious neighbors. What else can they do but throw a get-acquatnted barbecue. They may not be anv. ious to shake his hands, but they certainly appreciate Edward's cre- ative hedge clipping. paodle grooming and coiffures. And he's better than a Vegematic for cutting up salad fixings. However, the Bogg’s teenage daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder), is a bit more apprehensive. Maybe it’s his gawky nervousness around her. Perhaps it’s the soulful glances. At any rate, her loutish boyfriend, Jim (Anthony Michael Hall) is more direct. Edward is a freak, a Freddy Krueger with a marginally better complexion. Tim Burton has composed a cross between Grimms fairy tales and the Monkees’ Pleasant Valley Sunday, a ‘60s pop rail against sterile conformity. Burton’s unique talent not only draws these disparate elements together, but creates magic. Musical col- Jaborator Danny Eliman abandons his usual Batman bombast to weave a delicate and haunting score. The centrepiece, however, is Johnny Depp's performance as the boy who will never fit in. It’s touching, funny and brimming with innocence. Local curator lands TERRY LEWIS of the North Shore Museum and Ar- chives is the new assistant curator of the Canadian Craft Museum. Winona Ryder in a blonde wig is 180 degrees fram her usual twisted teenager. She even narrates the story under her heavy makeup as an aging prand- mother. This is a Christnas movie that has the heart and beauty of Disney at its best. Edward Scissorhands ts a wonderful film. The Brother from Another Planet *** (Key Home Video) Rated Mature Independent filmmaker john Sayles made a similar sweet- natured satire in this story of an alien visitor (joe Morton) who happens to be black. Since he lands in Harlem he is accepted as just another street person. His only oddities are three pointy toes on each foot and his muteness. Despite this lack of speech, the newcomer is very eloquent to the humans he encounters, com- municating exactly what they want to hear. Sayles does a fine job directing on a minuscule budget and ap- pears as one of two aliens hunting down their escaped quarry. NORTH SHORE VIEWS West Van Odeon: Havana, Mermaids, Henry & june.
