The money will ensure local
access to information on starting a
business and marketing goods and
services. Information is also pro-
vided on. government programs
and regulations as well as expan-
sion strategies for existing local
businesses.

“Our government, working in
partnership with the North Van-
couver chamber, provides access
to vital business information ser-
vices that will assist in the growth
and diversification of the local
economy,’’ said B.C. Economic
Development. Minister David Zir-
nhelt.

North Vancouver-Lonsdale
NDP MLA David Schreck said the
BIC program will assist the local
chamber to provide North Van-
couver with the most up-to-date
business information available.

The 85 BICs across B.C. are
electronically linked by a pro-
vince-wide computerized com-
munication system called
Chamberlink.

mediate sharing of the knowledge

BALLARD BUS

A ZERO-emissions bus developed
by North Vancouver-based
Ballard Power Systems Inc.,
toured the streets of Southland,
California for the first time on
Wednesday, signifying a major
step towards the international
marketing of B.C.’s  state-of-
the-art pollution-free transporta-
tion technology. -

On Friday, California’s South
Coast Air Quality Menagement
District was to consider increasing
funding to Ballard from $250,000
to $325,000 for further develop-
ment of the fuel cell transit bus.

The California agency’s support
of the zero-emissions vehicle
(ZEV) was provided with the un-

The bus, developed by Ballard
in partnership with the provincial
and federal governments, uses fuel
cells.

The cells convert hydrogen and
oxygen gas to electricity, which
powers an electric motor ‘in the
vehicle. The bus's only by-product
is pure, drinkable water.

Southland officials hope to
share in the production of many
components of Ballard’s fuel ceil
bus, making the region a leader in
pollution-free transportation .tech-
nology.

Ballard hopes to have a cost
effective commercial ZEV ready
for public use -within.three years.
A. small test fleet and commer-
cialization of the technology is
planned by the eng of the decade.
