Long service GEORG Koslowski, left, chairman of West Vancouver’s 2000 advi- sory design panel (AGP), was on hand to honour lan Morrison, West Van’s chief building inspector, director of operations and secretary to the ADP Dec. 14. From page 1 sharing the dry clothing he was carrying in his pack. He stayed with the injured men and continued to assist them even after North Shore Rescue personnel arrived, despite being deeply chilled himself. He hiked back out, unaided, at five o'clock that night. “1 was lucky to have virtual- ly no injuries,” he said, although his toes didn’t warm up for about three weeks. In 1999, Rutland’s heroic behaviour earned him a certifi- cate of honour from North Vancouver District Council and a Connelly nomination from the North Shore Kiwanis Club. He also received a Carnegie Hero Fund medal and monetary award. But perhaps the most last- ing commemoration of that day has been his subsequent volunteer work with the Lions KEN Rutland helped save victims of the Grouse Grind avalanche. Bay Search and Rescue Team. Rutland, 2 special constable with TransLink security, had thought about volunteering with North Shore Search and Rescue a few years ago. But at the time, he wasn’t interested in pursuing one of the require- ts chases mad my TRecoadiloaad ments: an industrial first aid ticket. Following the Grouse Grind incident, he took wilder- ness winter survival courses to educate himself because, as he said, “I felt I had shown a lapse in judgement over the weather and conditions that day. But | believe I was in the wrong place at the right time.” Now Rudand trains with Lions Bay Search and Rescue once a week and has been going out on volunteer call- outs. He anticipates working the February trip to Ottawa into his days off, although he con- cedes that TransLink would probably be flexible with his schedule under the circum- stances. Brenda Jones, media rela- tions manager for TransLink said, “We are very, very proud of Ken’s accomplishments and to have someone of his calibre working with us.” iillir volus'gmount of the ing UYax dollors will be no ahd deduction doas not taxtexempt stots. fall esrantits ts opel rt Wednesday, December 27, 2000 - North Shore News - 713 BOOT 15 COMING. ..
