Dear Editor, To all of North Vancouver city council, North Vancouver district council, and the North Vancouver Recreation Commission: have just been made aware that the fees for trying to stay fit and healthy and not become a burden and expense to society and the already over- loaded health system have been increased by 50 per cent for seniors, for others too, of course, but the largest impact will be on seniors and others who, for the most part, are on a fixed income. According to the propagan- da put out by the rec commis- sion, which reads like the work of a spin doctor hired by Victoria, we are going to get more bang for our buck. Excuse me, but we did not ask for this. The “bang” we are getting already is just fine. We have no desire to use the facili- ties at night. These hours are for people who are stil! work- ing and, unlike seniors, cannot use the facilities in the daytime. As far as comparisons ‘being made to other facilities in other municipalities, this docs not really interest us. We live here and spend our pensions here. We pay our taxes here and do our bit to support our own economy as we have done gen- crously in the past. [tis our understanding that the previous district council ini- tiated a motion which went to the Union of B.C. municipali- ties convention that recreation and fitness programs be made part of the health system. We were certainly proud of the enlightened stand our council- lors took. That pride has just been dealt a death blow. Did both councils actually give the rec commission permission to go ahead with this giant ieap in fees, which incidentally appears to have been put through dur- ing the summer when most. people are away? Did council representatives who sit on the rec commission vote in favour? The last time a large fee increase was contemplated we appealed to both councils and the large increase was rescinded and replaced with a modest ” one. Finally, ladies and genie- men of the two councils and the rec commission, we ask you to cancel this huge fee increase. We feel that, in all conscience, you cannot Teally expect your’: senior citizens to cope with, this. A very modest increase; we can manage but not this. _ 26 members and_partici- pants in the Over 50 train-. ing classes Advocacy needed Dear Editor, We were shocked to read the fetter from Patrick Ryan (Friday, Aug. 11) about the cutback. ta the Consumer Advocacy Program at Canadian Mental Health Association. Mental illness often’ pre- vents many people from deal- ing with financial problems, housing, medical, etc. Many people are isolated and do not even have a telephone in order to reach out for help. In the past three years, we have used this service to over- come a variety of serious prob- lems and it is only due to this program that our quality of life © as improved. If there were adequate support and financial . services perhaps there would: not be a need for advocacy.. However, given the numerous * hoops that the government .: make us jump through, advo cacy is a growing service. We are perplexed as to how: the North Shore Health’ Region has allotted six million | to upgrading computers on the / North Shore, but cannot find few thousand to run ‘a benefi-! cial and effective service.
