Dukes down Eagles

THE second-place Windsor Dukes
clipped the previously unbeaten
Carson Graham Eagles 61-55 to
win the senior girls’ North Shore
basketball finals held at Carson
Feb. 14 and 15.

The game was hotly contested
throughout with the Dukes jump-
ing to a 30-17 first-quarter lead
behind a tremendous full court
Press and Jen Smallridge’s 14
points,

The Eagles fought back to
within five points at the half, and

came to within one in the fourth
quarter, but six straight foul shots
by Marie Vecsey clinched the game
for the Windsor squad.

Jen Smattridge led all scorers
with 31 points.

The championship was the
fourth in the last nine years for
coach Jim Harrison, who was
elated with the upset win.

In a consolation game for third
place, the Sentinel Spartans came
from behind to defeat Argyle
Pipers 52-51.

The tournament all-star team
consisted of Sue Smith (Argyle),
Sobhin Martin (Sentinel), Laureen
Lohin (Carson), Marie Vecsey
(Windsor) and Deanna Bell (Car-
son).

Jen Smallridge was selected the
tournament’s Most Valuable
Player.

All four play-off teams and
Sutherland Sabres now advance to
the qualifying tournament for the
B.C. championships to be held at
Abbotsford March 5 to 8.
