anadian military Dear Editor: Re: Feb. 9 North Shore News cartoon depicting our military’s new piece of camoutlage —— a paper bag. I believe it is the media that should put the bag over their head for their over-kill and myopic coverage of this tragic event. While not wanting to even appear to condone the sickening murder of a hungry Somali teenag- er by a few (yes, a few) renegade soldiers, | believe we have passed the point where anymore significant good can come from this by con- demning the entire military establishment in general like this. As Jane Fonda fourid out a few years ago when she had to apologize to the Viemam veter- ans for her overzealous ’60s ravings about any- one and everyone in uniform, that history some- times takes a different view. Consider: f2 We were there to help and help we did. Because of Canadian military personnel and their direct efforts I am willing to wager that hun- dreds, if not thousands of Somali men, women and children were saved from horrible starvation and live a better life today. Wi There are many different branches of the mil- itary that are being tarred with the same brush. From the search and rescue branch that save More theatre space Dear Editor: I was delighted to see the big spread devoted to the cur- rent production at Presentation House of Glengarry Glen Ros (North Shore News Feb 19 page 17). Obviously director Martin Millerchip has a lot of pull at the North Shore News. - So here’s hoping that when he has finished playing direc- tor and returns to his drama critic’s desk he will use that influence to ensure that in the months ahead the produc- tions of other North Shore community theatre groups enjoy equal space! ; ‘A. Gerald Floyd North Vancouver thousands of lives each year at home, to our UN forces around the world keeping the peace. All the troops read the paper and watch the news. @ The Canadian military is made up of people who have vowed to give up their lives to defend us and would be the first to go into the line of fire on our behalf if trouble should arrive. @ The same people who would ship out first, have homes and families that today are faced with massive budget cuts and downsizing at their place of employment. Imagine the pressure of not knowing your future at the office while at the same time being viewed in the media as a object of ridicule and shame (paper bag?). T am 200% for justice taking its course, and if in the course of an ‘ppropriate and full investiga- fon, we uncover and route out a few more bad apples all the better. Bur the wholesale, Fleet-Street-style, tar and feathering of the Canadian military should stop now. Whatever the future holds for Canada, a weak and disillusioned armed forces will not make the situation better. Patrick Hogan North Vancouver PatrickHogan@be.sympatico.ca Proud of our Armed Forces Dear Editor: Why are we allowing dis- respectful, demeaning and sometimes sarcastic treatment of our Armed Forces by inquisitors who are far lesser men than they? Bureaucrats don’t have the right to belittle these men. To write this letter is the least I can do for them. I wish I could do more.
