Van Lonsdale BY IAN NOBLE es News Reporter THOUGH the NDP was returned to power in B.C. with a majority government Tuesday, the party’s ‘lone North Shore NDP MLA was defeated by Liberal newcomer Katherine Whittred in North ’ Vancouver-Leonsdale. In a small room at the Avalon Hotel, incumbent David Schreck was hoping to " make history as a two-term NDP MLA on the North Shore Tuesday night. “This is not NDP territory,” he said while waiting for the television to spew _ out local poll results. “If I win it will be historic.” : Schreck, who’s been an outspoken MLA never at a loss for words, acknowl- _ edged:- “I'm apprehensive and I’tm “7 tense.” - : : Finally, a subdued reaction from “approximately 60 ethnically diverse os NDP supporters at the Avalon greeted “”.. news that Whittred was ahead in the first ‘poll. Others, Schreck said, told him the education issue cost him their votes. “The education issue cut both ways,” he said. ve A staunch supporter of the Election Act, ‘which: restricts’ to’ $5,000 the amount of money individuals or groups other than registered political parties can spend supporting or opposing candidates during provincial elections, Schreck also .. voted for amendments to the Human Rights Act that further limit press free- doms and free expression. - Schreck refused to run any election advertising in the News because of the newspaper's outspoken campaiga opposing the Election Act and its gag on free speech. He could not be reached to press time after his loss became official. Schreck won the North Vancouver- Lonsdale riding in 1991 with 7,535 votes or 38.62% of the total. Then- Liberal ‘party president Floyd Sully, a candidate parachuted into the riding, fin- ished second, capturing 36.19% of the vote, a scant 476 votes behind Schreck. GEOFF Felton deposits a voter's card as he and Darci Cas B.C. elects NDP majority BY IAN NOBLE AND ROBERT GALSTER News Reporters THE upbeat mood at North Vancouver-Seymour Dan Jarvis’ campaign headquarters early Tuesday was echoed across the North Shore with an eventual Liberal sweep of four ridings. Red and white balloons, a four-member band and a food and drink spread greeted Jarvis supporters who showed up at 8 p.m. to watch their man breeze to victory. Before any results came in, Jarvis himself predicted he'd beat his 51% share of the vote he drew in 1991 based on track- ing conducted by his campaign. Said Mike, a Jarvis supporter who would not provide his last name: “We are feeling confi- dent. That's the nicest way to putin” However, Jarvis’ soothsaying fell short of the 44 Liberals he- predicted would be sent to Victoria. The NDP ended the day with a majority government. The Liberals are again saddled with the title of official opposi- tion. Jarvis and three fellow North Shore Liberal MLAs will find themselves on the outside looking in.
