have cailed requesting
a bit of clarity in

regard to the Four-Way
Stop, so while the sub-
ject nas been discussed
before in small detail, it
can’t hurt to reiterate
and yeaffirm what most
drivers already know.

First of all, a Four-Way-
Stop is easily recognizable
(little tabs that read “4-Way"
under the stop sign is the
first clue), but, most reliably,
understand that there are
always four octagon-shapes
‘posted on four corners of a
4-Way-Stop intersection. It
is impossible to misconstrue
this evidence since the osta-
gon is teserved strictly for
stop-signs.

The general rule is: First
Come, First Go.

That means first to stop at
the intersection, not first to
arrive in the general area.
Too often impatient drivers
lined upon one street only to
assume they can go first sim-
ply because they've been
waiting much longer than a
car arriving at a cross street
at the last moment. Wrong
move.

When two vehicles (and
only two) reach the 4-Way at
the same time, facing each
other, and one wants to turn’
left while the other doesn’t,
the driver going straight has
the right of way (otherwise
they can go at the same time,
you understand).

‘When two vehicles arrive
at the same time but are per-
pendicular, the car on the
right goes first.

‘Conflicts often arise when
an inexperienced or bewil-
dered driver approaches a 4-
Way but forgets to look
around before arriving; he or
she will come to the required
stop and only then notice

_other vehicles — without
knowing when they arrived.

Heads up, folks! Traffic
can flow relatively smoothly
if one is locking ahead and
planning ahead, Timing is
everything. You usually
won't have to ask yourself
“who's next?” if you simply
look around before you even -'
‘come to a full stop.

“Who's next?” problems
can also be caused by those

discourteous drivers who
refuse to come to a full stop,
or when they do stop, are
way past the stop line.
Seems these drivers assume
that other drivers are aware
their true intentions, in spite
of all evidence to the con-
trary. And they're often
wroiig,

Often, uncertain drivers
will cdge out, stop for anoth-
er driver edging out who also
stops, and then both will try
again, Following this little
dance one vehicle will final-
ly “gun it” and clear the
intersection.

Personally, I try to avoid
these little conflicts by pre-
tending to change the radio
station or adjust my mirror
thereby convincing the other
driver that 1 do nat believe it
to be my turn, even though it
may be.
