THE ALL-NEW VW Golf Ecomatics are the first vehicles in Germany to run on bio-dissel, an alternative fuel. Bio-diesel makes debut in Germany IN EARLY April, the German Transport Ministry approved all new Golf Ecomatics to run on bio- diesel, a new alternative fuel containing rapeseed oil methyl ester (RME). Alternative fuel experts esti- mate that using the bio-diese! fuel reduces the emissions that cause global warming by at least 30% over regular diese! fuel. Also, it is reported that sulphur, soot and particle emissions are alse signifi- cantly reduced. Just recently, the first filling station for the new alternative fuel has been opened by the Raiffeinsen Hauptgenossenschaft Nord AG (RHG) in Hanover, Germany. Volkswagen and RHG plan to increase the number of bio-diesel filling stations quite rapidly over the next six months. The German company will install pumps at VW/Audi dealers throughout major North German cities and SUNDAYS! 1] supply stations with the new fuel. In addition, RHG filling sta- tions in rural areas of the German states of Lower Saxony, Saxony- Anhalt and Brandenburg will be equipped with BioDiesel pumps. Currently the Golf Ecomatic is the only passenger car available on the German market that has been approved by its manufacturer to use bio-diesel fuel. The environmental advantages of Volkswagens's Ecomatic tech- nology combined with the use of bio-diesel are considerable. The Ecomatic reportedly cuts fuel consumption by as much as 22% while reducing certain poilu- tants in the exhaust by 36%. Also, according to the German automaker. vehicle performance is almost completely unaffected by the use of bio-diesel.
