According to Bellows, the young woman
was at Ambleside on her lunch hour, eating her
bag lunch and reading a newsletter.

Napierala approached and asked her for the
time. She responded and continued her reading.
“Within a minute, she felt a hand over her
mouth,” Bellows told the court.

The prosecutor said the woman pleaded for
merey as Napierala groped and tore at her
clothes in broad daylight, just 15 ft. (4.5 m)
away from an occupied building. Napierala
walked cast on the BC Rail track after the attack.

In his attempt to escape, he lunged at a lone
West Vancouver Police officer on the trestle and
grabbed the policeman’s gun with both hands.

The disarmed officer jumped off on to the
river embankment and hid under the trestle.

Napierala fired at him s€veral times and shot
wt two other officers who arrived at the scene.
