He and the town council have invited government officials and the development's principal players to discuss the Brohm Ridge/Garibaldi proposal’ at a special public meeting on Thurs- day afterncon. ~ Mayor Tobus said in an inter- view on Monday that with Squamish ‘‘struggling to ensure its economic stability ... we are con- cerned at the government dismiss- ing this pian.” Last month, the province re- jected the project from Garibaldi Alpen Resorts Ltd. (GAR) on the strength of a study the environ- ment and lands ministry commis- sioned from Sno-E Canada Ltd., a Whistier-based consultancy. That study questioned the private financing available and doubted that the site could be de- veloped as a year-round resort. But now the Squamish council wants a full accounting and has invied GAR chairman Wolfgang By John Pifer From Victoria Richter, lands ministry director Dick Roberts, and a representative of Sno-E to the Thursday open meeting, Mayor Tobus said he was “‘astonished’’ at the government’s decision to reject the Alpen plan without further consultation. He has tried on several occa- sions to meet with Environment Minister John Cashore on the issue, but to no avail. Some Crown lands officials met privately with the Squamish coun- cil late last week, the results of which should be aired on Thurs- day. In Victoria, officials in the tourism and economic develop- ment ministries say that although they are interested in the project, they cannot interfere in the deci- sion taken by Cashore’s staff. The GAR proposal to develop the 8,000-acre Brohm Ridge site on Crown land was first submitted two years ago. Richter says there would be no public funds involved in his com- pany’s development, a factor that Mayor Tobus called significant.
