Kindree wants both governments to begin a wide-spread tick collection and study program in B.C. Kindree contracted Lyme disease while gardening at her home during the summer of 1988. TICKED OFF Lyme disease victims battle illness and government LOCAL LYME disease victims are “ticked off.’ By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter So says the latest newsletter of the North Shore-based Lyme Bor- reliosis Support Group of B.C. And what they’re ticked off about is the lack of leadership the B.C. government and medical pro- fession is showing in educating the province about Lyme disease, says Diane Kindree, a West Vancouver tesident and co-founder of the support group. The disease, transmitted to humans by an infected tick, is not officially recognized in B.C. because a tick carrying the bacterium (borrelia burgdorferi) has yet to be isolated in B.C. But Kindree, 37, believes she contracted Lyme disease in August 1988 while gardening in her back ard, “I had a bite,”’ she said. ‘‘I was out in the yard gardening, we were doing some landscaping. We'd been out there all summer and I'd been bitten lots but this particular bite I remembered later. “I flicked something off and I thought, ‘Gee it won't come off,’ then I flicked something again and something dropped to the ground. “After a while when I came in I wiped it off, there was blood and there was this welt,’’ Kindree said. “J didn’t think anything of it. As I say, the welt went down.”’ But a week later, Kindree felt flu-like symptoms that kept recur- ring. SHYAM HIRA My TRACK RECORD SOLD over 60 units in 1989. She had aching joints, swelling in one knee, stomach and bowel problems, as well as debilitating fatigue. The symptoms continued ta baffle doctors even after a week of tests in January 1989. “It was a very thorough check- up, but the bottom line was no one was checking for Lyme disease,"’ Kindree said. It wasn’t until June 1989 that Kindree was found to have Lyme disease. After both intravenous antibiot- ic treatment and oral antibiotics, Kindree has recovered to the point where she can walk the West Van- couver seawall and garden. 984-4111 (next to Beaver Lumber) That First Spring Car Wash Won't Scrub Away Winter's Damage! In the eight months since Kin- dree formed the support group with two other West Vancouver Lyme disease sufferers, member- ship has grown to 45 and other support groups are being founded in the province. Kindree says the provincial gov- ernment should be doing more, both in identifying the ticks and educating the public before claim- ing that there are no infected ticks in B.C. “They can’t possibly say there’s no Lyme disease here until they See Pravention Page 11 * Thousands of color choices, : Gren ‘baked fin: Frea estmales on bodywork . ewniten Qquaraniee |.
