Each week a reader's question will be answered by an expert in the automoatives trade. This week's question is: My car isa 198] Pinto and has been an ex- cellent car over the years. The maintenance has been handled by the same two mechanics ® since I bought it. There has never been a ma- jor problem. However, there is now a squeak that appears in warm weather or after driving a distance in cooler weather. This becomes quite loud at times. It seems to squeak in unison with the tire rotation when my foot is on the gas pedal and comes from the rear. My two very reliable mechanics have checked everything including the wheels. Can you give me a clue as to what might be causing this noise and what 1 should have the mechanics check? Phyllis Havbo, West Vancouver Intermittent car problems of any kind can be very A. difficult for auto mechanics to diagnose. Having said that, 1 do have a few suggestions that your mechanic could take a closer look at. Tires and wheels are of course a likely source of the noise, but you've indicated that this possibility has already been thoroughly checked, so let’s not consider them as a possible cause. That leaves driveline, brakes or suspension (unlikely) so try the following: eDrive shaft universal joints may look okay but could be dry or rusted inside. To check the U-joints properly it may be necessary to take the driveshaft off the car and take the joints apart. eCheck slinger, companion flange or end yoke rubbing on rear axle carrier. eCheck for dust or oil in rear brake drums. elnspect brake linings for proper bonding, embedded foreign material or signs of metal shoe contact with drum.
