They'd like to do the same on this continent. The smart matching of Boney M. pro- ducer-songwriter Frank Farian with the hip-hop intuitive Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan (the Milli Vanillians) has resulted in a bubbi- ing fresh serving of R&B pop. Pilatus and Morvan cover lots of bases in an effort to get something to stick to the charts and unstick dance-hall feet. Straight R&B Motown-flavored ballads vie for attention alongside wilder, sample-laden mixes. There is soul in the music, it’s loose and cool and Rob and Fab are interesting to look at. The per- tinent mass-marketing criteria for success are met. *** The Judds — River Of Time, RCA 1989 Naomi and Wynonna — the glamor-puss, mother-daughter duo that always leaves you shaking your fool! head in amazement when you see them standing side-by-side, and you whistle and wonder how mom seems to be cheating time because you just can’t tell which one is Naomi and which one is Wynonna — come up with a fine country release. The Scandinavians are breaking out across the fjords again. This three-piece unit is all gloss and polish and comes with a bankable pedigree — One 2 Many keyboardist and songwriter Dag Kolsrud arranged and performed with A-Ha in 1986. The new band is basically a Dag product with Dag writing and Dag producing and Dag arranging and Dag whiz- zing around on the synthesizers on the debut release. Generic songstress Camilla Griehsel has a pleasantly clear everywoman’s voice which is given a sultry boost on a number of tunes by J.J., the soulfully-wail- ing backing vocalist borrowed from the Eurythmics. Singer-guitarist Bryan Harvey and drummer Johnny Hott cracked a tough nut, as relative unknowns, and won over the packed house by the irresistible power of Harvey’s great songs and earnest strumming, and Hott’s demonic percussion play. These two guys can do more with a guitar, snare and tom-tom drums, and cymbals than most contemporary rock pretenders do with a studio bristling with musical hardware.
