Simply put, lightscaping means landscaping your yard with install-it-yourscif low-voltaze lighting. Low-voltage lighting products extend backyard entertainment hours, personalize yards and improve safety and security. Low-voltage lights are safer, easier and less expen- sive to install than regular lighting. There is no risk of shock because low-voltage lights operate on 12 volt direct current instead of the 115 volts used for regular household lighting. Some real estate professionals say that attractive landscaping can add as much as I5 per cent to a home’s value, and bring as much as a 200 per cent return on the investment in plantings. A wide variety of low-voltage outdoor lighting fix- tures and accessories, which are both esthetic and functional, is available. Popular lighting fixtures include: Variable-focus floodlights, cylindrical post lights and wooden accent lights. The fixtures can be used to emphasize architec- tural or landscape details around patios, pools or walks. Functional lighting accessories such as motion detectors or alarms allow low-voltage lighting systems to function as security systems. Here are a few hints to consider when lightscaping your yard: ® Use temple-shaped accent lights along walkways or sidewalks for safety. © Consider mushroom-shaped garden lights along the edge of plantings for definition. © Try uplighting, or shining floodlights up into trees and bushes, to create moods and establish emphasis. © Define paths and driveways by downlighting with floodlights. © Try moonlighting, or shining a light down from high in a tree, to create emphasis and to diffuse light over a large area. ® Use stylish, cylindrical post lights around a gazebo or deck for esthetics and access.
