HANDSWORTH SECONDARY Jazz bands swing to the top HANDSWORTH bands finished the school vear on a high note, with a display case fuil of festival trophies attesting to. their hard work-and competitive spirit. The year culminated in May at the National Stage Band Finals held in Calgary. Led by 12-year Handsworth music teacher Bob Rebagiiatti, the Senior Jazz Band swung its way to first place in Canada, with the Dixieland Com- bo tieing for first in its class. The Senior Concert Band and the Junior Jazz Band also received gold ratings, with the Intermediate ‘A’ Concert Band receiving a silver medal for its second-place finish. The Dixieland Combo, which plays traditional Dixieland jazz and is composed of top members from the Senior Jazz Band, was invited to stay in Calgary for an extra day to be taped for 2 na- tional television show which will be aired later this year. David Malecot and Michiko Singh from the Senior Concert Band received $3,500 General Motors scholarships after audi- tioning with other students from across the countries. The Senior ‘and Junior Jazz Bands were invited to the Calgary festival after capturing top honors at the New Westminster and Sur- rey jazz festivals in March. At the New West festival, Schellenberg was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for his tenor sax playing, and Rob Somerville won the Best Drummer Award at the Surrey festival. “Their trophies are absolutely phenomenal -— I just love handling publicity for: them,’’ said parent Avrille Hewett. ‘*People like this turn into professionals when they graduate.’’ Under the direction of music teachers Claire Sparks and Rebagliatti, the bands are already counting on‘a full slate of festival appearances next year.
