$ - Sunday, December 14, 1986 -. Nori Shore News NV PLUMBING TESTED City sewers te smoke THE SEWERS OF North Vancouver City will be smoking next week. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter But the smoke will not result from resideat use. From Dee. 18 ta 19, the city’s enginecring department will be conducting smoke bomb tests along approximately 1.300 fect of sanitary sewer line. “We will be checking for the source of excessive water infiltra- tion (into the sewer system) from leaks and improper pipe connec- tions," assistant city engineer Hugh McKay said Thursday. The test area will be bounded by West Grand Boulevard and St. Andrews to the west and east and by 13th and 8th Streets to the north and south. It will affeet about 300 homes. McKay said water running into the city’s sanitary sewer system from sources such as runoff catch basins and home drainage systems increases the city's sewer costs to the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) because those costs are calculated on water vat ume. Excess water infiltration — is suspected, MekKay said, because peak volume in the sanitary sewer system appears to coincide with heavy rains, “and the sanitary sewer should not be affected by rain.’ City crews will therefore drop the smoke bombs down manholes and blow the resulting smoke through the system. Leaks from faulty or incorreet connections can then he pinpointed by where the thick, white smoke escapes. MekKay said smoke should be released through sewer air vents and will only leak into area houses if plunibing is faulty or damaged. He added that the smoke is ir- ritating to breathe, but dissipates in about five minutes. Residents with respiratory pro- bleins, he said, should advise the city engineering department prior to the tests by phoning 987-7155, Cost of the initial rest will be approximately $4,500, Additional tests are planned for other city neighborhoods in’ the new year, Mekay said, ay WITH CONFIDEN Pe oTaanaye SUNSHINE TANNING STUDIOS 347 BEWICKE NORTH VAN « 984.8881 1448 W.
