Club gymnasts came out 7n
top at a major pre-world in-
vitational held August 2 to
4

‘In the 12 country competi-
tion Sandra Botnen, was the
top Canadian, finishing in
sixth place with a total of
74.85.

Diana Dudeva and
Demireva Bojanka of
Bulgaria took the top two
places with 76.90 and 76.50
repectively. Yolanda Mavity
of U.S.A., who competed at
the North Shore Invita-
tional, was third with 76.10.
Tracy Wilson of Flicka plac-
ed 10th with 73.80.

Botnen’s top event was the
floor exercise where she
finished fifth, compiling top
scores of 9.60 in her com-
pulsory, optional and final
exercises in superb perfor-
mances, Wilson’s top event
was the balance beam where
she finished fifth with
18,650.

Botnen was seventh on
vault with 18.70 and bars
with 18.35, and came ninth
on beam with 18.350.

Mike Vossen, Flicka head
coach, will select 20 women
at the end of August for a
competition to narrow down
the numbers to 12. He will
have four girls eligible.
Along with Botnen and
Wilson, are Mirian Michel
and Kristin Wingfield.

GRANT CONNELL, North
Vancouver’s 19-year-old
tennis whiz kid, blasted his
way through preliminary
rounds to qualify for the
Canadian Open tennis tour-
nament.

The $500,000 tournament,
which opened Monday in
Moritreal, features a field
from the top 200 secded
players in the world.

his qualifying round matches
beating both Stuart Bale of
Great Britain 6-4, 7-6 and
Eddie Edwards of South
Africa 6-3, 6-2.

After winning the Unicure
Stanely Park Open August
5, his first professional
tournament, Connell packed
his racquet and ambitions
off to Montreal last ‘Thurs-
day. He has been playing
tennis for six years.
