- sin dus, Murch $0. 8985S - North Shore News $time for Canada io tell the world officially how welcome illegal immigrants are here, and how it's thal much better if they are crooks of the violent sort. Word does travel via the grapevine, of course, but any fair-minded person would agree that that’s not good enough, What is peed- ed is a full-scale interna- dional advertising campaign to show everyone, regardless of race or religion, that crooks have nothing to fear in this country, that there is equal opportunity for all, and that deportation is nothing more chan fiction. Fair shakes lor foreign crooks, That's our motto, and the sooner we proclaim it in full-page notices in the get this straight Doug Collins 2 EE Peking Daily, the Goergetown Gazette and the Hindustani Times. the hap- pier ! shall be. These humanitarian thoughts are inspired by two cases that hit the public prints recently down East. The first one concerns a black crook from the West Indies who died at the hands of the trigger-happy Toronto police. Leander Savoury (great name, that) was only 21 years of age when he went to meet his Maker, but was known to his many friends as Papa Lea. (Why he was given this sobriquet is not clear. [ft may fiave been because he shared his drugs with little kids.) In 1980, Papa was sentenced to jail for six years on account of his habit of using a gun to hold up gas stations, Four years later, when Papa was being let out oan parale, the immigration department obtained a deportation order agains! him. (Those people know nothing about policy. of course, and are interested HE'HEART:: /OF SOMEONE YOU. KNOW. only in giving this country a bad name.) But Papa knew what policy was. He appeal- ed, and won a three-year slay, which was ays good as having the order torn up. Eager to show society he was gainfully employed, Papa held up several gas sta- tion in January, murdering one attendant in the process. Then one night, the cops caught him in the act. He pointed a sawed off shot-gun at chem, and they sent him to meet Rasta. HW you ask me, Jamaica should get an apology. The second cause concerns a native of Canton, who is up for attempted murder and whont we will call) Mr. Hang Sin (his real name probably being an invention anyway, he having a fot of initiative). Mr. Sin jumped ship in Vancouver in 1978. Two years later he surfiteed in Ontario, where he was work- ing illegally as a short-order clerk. He surrendered to immigration (probably dur- ing one of the many ‘make our country your country’ amnesties for which we vet top marks at the U.N.) But the immigration people decided Mr. Sin was up to his eves in crookery rather than cookery, and ordered hinyout of the country too. Before you could say Sin, Hang had been ‘‘deported’* to a U.S. border point and re-admitied with a minister's permit good for one year. (Some people fave good contacts.) By 1983, Mr. Sin had a number of criminal convic- tios to his credit involving prostitution and gambling. Our national policy on foreign crooks being what it is, though, ] am pleased to report that he had no trouble obtaining more ministerial permits to stay in Canada, the last one expiring in June, 1984. The attempted murder charge resulted Srom argu- ments between Mr. Sin's gang and another gang in Toronto's Chinatown, One can only hope that it ail comes out inthe wash for Nir. Sin. Without doubt, he is an enterprising person and creates employment i this vountry, The courts, cops and lawyers all have reason to be grateful for his having arrived, With a proper advertising campaign, the openings for people dike Mr Sin and Papa should be good. and the benefits for Canada poundless.
