40 - Sunday, March 31, 1985 - North Shore News Pienty to do for family FOR THE many Lower Mainland families who make it an annual date, a visit to the Vancouver Sportsmen's Show is always a fun outing. And this year it could be a lucky one as weil. Everyone attending the 1985 Sportsmen’s Show at B.C. Place Stadium April 11 to 14 can enter a draw for an inflatable 12° Metzler Adven- ture Boat complete with out- board mutor, fishing rods and tackle. As usual, ihe show is geared to family participa- tion, with featured per- formers, activities, displays and demonstrations to appeal to every age group. While Mom and Dad tour the more than 100 displays of the Jatest equipment designed to enhance enjoyment of the outdoor life, up and coming anglers can head for the casting pool. It is a perennial favorite with the youngsters and this year there is the add- ed attraction of a free tackie box for the first 50 boys and girls to register each day. The whole family will want to watch American's Australian bull whip and rope whiz, Joyce Rice, as she turns the traditional cowboy skill of calf roping into a vir- tuoso performance which has been acclaimed at sport shows. theatres, and night clubs on this continent, in England, Exrope, the Middle East and Japan. In an act never before at- tempted by a woman, she demonstrates the intricate technique of Australian multiple whip cracking. And then just for fun, she lassoes a cowboy and casually flicks a handkerchief out of his hip pocket with her whip. A big hit recently at the Calgary Sportsmen's Show, the White Clouds (Kenneth Pierce and his wife Donna) will repeat their breathtaking knife-throwing act at the Vancouver Sportsmen’s Show. The White Clouds are a family of Seneca Indians who live in Salamanca, N.Y. and Pierce (Prince Chi Chi) is car- rying on a family tradition in performing the act originated by his parents some 40 years ago. He is billed as “‘the world’s fastest knife thrower’? and his act is not for the faint of heart. It is climaxed by the Wheel of Death, in) which Donna is strapped to a wheel, and Pierce hurls razor-edged knives to pin her to it by her clothing as it revolves. For a change of pace, visitors can look in at the Purina Pet Extravaganza, which provides almost non- stup entertainment, including demonstrations by the B.C. Association of Retriever Trial Clubs. Or watch members of the Lower Mainland branch of the B.C. Wildlife Federation tving flies, loading shells and demonstrating taxidermy and hunter safety. Or examine the antique Marlin firearms in the display presented by Cen- turion Safes Lid. Members of fishing families can learn a for and have a lot of fun by cam. peting with each other. > oe _ pesercwer —_— Be your own Auto Expert” with many handy aids youll find at Safeway's ... car-Care corne™ OE Safeway - .
