The centre, located at Qucen Mary Community School, recently installed eignt computers te aid in the programs it offers for adults who swish to further their education or work towards their righ school diplomas. The computers enable the students to work at their By BARRETT own speed, achieving an in- creased amount of work by not having to wait for teach- er aid, explains Barbara McBride, coordinator in charge of the Adult Learning Centre. Studies that took students six to eight months to complete before at the centre, now take two to four months. “The computer gives im- mediate feedback,”’ she says, “and tells the student to go on, or plugs him back into a program which teaches the missing skills.’” The computer program is still overseen by a teacher, who instructs students on computer use, helps with any misunderstindings and monitors programs to see if January 16, 1985 a one-on-one is needed for extra emphasis, but other- wise, the students work in- dependently. Based on text book studies, the computers’ software discs cover studies in readirg, writing, math and science. Complementing the com- puter work period, is a tutorial, where teachers work with students (to sce how they are progressing and to give individual in- struction. Students who attend the Adult Learning program are first given diagnostic tests to determine individual levels in subjects. Then upon entering the computer program, the student receives a 15-minute orientation, which instructor Jean Wilson says is cnough to get him feeling confident on the machine. Then a se- cond diagnostic test would be given to decide which specific areas within a sub- ject need concentration. McBride encourages stu- dents who have quit school, or students with little to no school training to upgrade skills. Grade 10 and 12 cer- tificates are available, she says, grade 10 being impor- tant for further vocational training, and grade 12 im- portant for most jobs. Art Chalmers, a 72-year- u.d student, has been atten- ding the Adult Learning Centre for two years now, upgrading his reading and writing on the computers, and as he says, “it’s never too late to learn.” Career Access is a work experience program offered to students enrolled at the school. The learning centre SECTICN ASHION « FOOD TRAVEL will help the students find a part-time job, and will reimburse the employer for 50 per cent of the wage. The work experience gives stu- dents a job reference for their resume. Deadline for placement this term is Feb- Tuary 4. The cost for the learning program is $35 a month, and financial aid is available for COORDINATOR Barbara McBride students who need it for up to 5C per cent of the cest.
