On the silver screen, Phar Lap is making money and is one of the better bets for family entertainment this summer. Based on the true story of the Australian wonder horse called Phar Lap, which raced from 1929 to 1932, the Down Under film takes every cliche known to Hollywood and combines them with a winn- ing Walt Disney style cast, that happens to talk with an Aussie accent. Phar Lap leaves the star- ting gate in first place as the film opens. Rough, gruff horse trainer Harry Telford (Martin Vaughan) has pur- chased a scruffy, tired- looking New Zealand bred horse, betting that its blood lines will urge it on to the winner’s post. After one look at the horse, his boss orders him to sell it and stop wasting time. Nothing doing, says Harry. By COLIN LAMONT In the best fashion of a heart-warming family film, Harry wagers his own money and future on the horse that will go on to become an Australian legend. Even Harry’s wife can’t sway him when there isn’t enough money left to buy shoes for the baby. Phar Lap begins to fill out with regular feed and care, but Harry turns out to be the Nasty type and works the horse hard, vowing to kill it or make it into a champion. Only the stableboy, true blue all Australian Tom Woodcock (Tom Burlinson) stops Harry from abusing the horse. Tom loves Phar Lap and protects it from all and everything that would harm Phar Lap runs the distance the would-be winner. It is Tom that learns Phar Lap 1s indeed a great runner if it is held back untl the other horses are far ahead of it. A champion is discovered. In a short ume, Phar Lap is burning up every Australian track there is. The coveted Melbourne Cup 1s soon sitting in the display case Of happy Harry. But Phar Lap’s owner and Harry soon discover that fixing a few bets can also make money. The number of villainous plots that arise at this point in the film would soon make a loser out of it if it were not for the always superb camera work. From Harry and Phar Lap galloping through the brilhant yellow sand dunes of the outback to closeups of Phar Lap streaking down the track bound for glory, the camera crew captures the real story of this amazing horse. Finally Phar Lap is invited to race in America and boards the boat with guar- dian Tom, newly promoted from stableboy to trainer. The spirited gelding turns out to “be too much for its American rivals and cleans house in its first U.S. race. But here is the fatal flaw in the movie. After winning the race, the film shows Phar Lap dying. The cause of death is left vague, when in reality, Phar Lap did have traces of poison in its system. The film settles for an anti- climatic ending with more tears than rage over the kill- ing of a great champion. But whatever its flaws, Phar Lap should have a long run in theatres this summer. Phar Lap is now playing at the Capitol Six and Park Royal.
