Trip to Europe brings disappointment

Very few things 1 didn’t
like - the pubs open a bit
later than most other cities
in England and |. must con-
fess I find York Minister
beautiful but a little on the
dull side. .

As for living in York - 1
could, but only on a tem-
perary basis. Firstly, I’m a
tabid Canadian (my family

has been here since the late
1700s) and secondly we've
lived in the same house for
over 21 years and I love it -
wouldn't move out if 1 were
offered Buckingham Palace.

train from Heathrow but in-
stead use the Air Bus to
either Victoria or Pad-
dington depending on where
I’m staying. When you get

to Heathrow, check with the.

information booth. Give
them the address you’re
heading for and they'll tell
you which service will get
you the closest.

wonderful about getting you

day afternoon would get far
in any Saturday afternoon

beer in one hand and a

chocolate mousse in
other — just not done sir!

Benny's Bistro is in its
formative stages having only
jus: opened its doors.
Crowds are sparse thus far
and atmosphere consequent-
ly suffers from the self-.
conscious hush. With live
music.on Thursday through
Saturday nights, however, it
has the potential to become
a low-priced Saturday after-
noon and any afternoon
alternative that fits in the
gaps between beer parlor,
pub, and full-blown restau-
rant.

Benny's Bistro is open
daily from 3 p.m. onward.

Dear Barbara: Have just
returned from England and
the Continent. 1 will say you
are right about packing. 1
saved your columns so I
could go by the book.

Here are my findings:

*No soap supplied in
French hotels, only a tube of
toothpaste. No face cloths.
Water to be purchased at
stores,

*Bed and breakfast in
England: In Crowlev, a
Continental breakfast. In
Horley. up at 8 for
breakfast, out ef room by
10. Breakfast was two slices
of cold toast and tea. No
need to bother getting up.
Disgusted.

*Scaffolds on ail
buildings, same as before.

The only highlight of my
trip was the lovely, clean
country in France, Belgium
and Holland. Even the cities
were clean and no scaffolds.

*London was dirty. 1
thought the garbagemen
were on strike. No porters
for baggage on buses or
trains. Next time, if there is
one, I will only wear what I
have on and a change.
Answer: [ have to admit you
have some valid points. The
scaffolding is unsightly but
you must realize that the
buildings must be repaired
and Britain’s economy has
been in such a bad way that
they’ve probably let the job
go until it reached the urgent
point - Wo. Jd War II didn’t
do them any favors. Makes

My next comment may in-
cite screams of ‘‘racist!"’ but
1 feel it’s valid. The popula-
tion of London is well over
half immigrants from the
Middle East, India and _ its
neighbors, and the Caribbe-
an. If you've ever visited any
of those places you’re aware
that their standards of
hygiene aren’t the same as
ours. Littering is a crime to
us; to them it’s a way of life.

The maintenance workers
in most public buildings are
predominently immigrants.
So are the maids in the
hotels. Some have been well

trained, others not.

I'm sorry you had such
poor experiences with B & B
accommodation. The hours
you mention are the norm -
B & B travellers are generally
people anxious to be up and
away - it’s hardly like loung-
ing around in the Hilton, is
it?

But, | have never en-
countered anything like you
describe for breakfast and |
very rarely stay anywhere
else but B & B’s. | wish you
had included the names of
the joints you lucked into so
we could warn everyone to
give them a miss.
