NORTH SHORE theatre groups will stage a special benefit for Presentaiton House at that North Shore cultural centre beginning tomorrow. Most of the proceeds from the three nights of entertain- ment (May 26 to 28) will be given to Presentation House to help ease its deficit, says Anne-Marie Lafleur, a member of the North Shore By TERRY LAVENDER theatre zone executive. Some of the money will go towards defraying the ex- penses of the North Shore entry in Festival 83, the pro- vincial drama festival held by Theatre B.C. tn Victoria from May 29 to June 4. The proceeds from the three nights will also be used to help compensate for $100 worth of sound equipment stolen from Presentation House during West Van- May 25, 1983 couver Littl Theatre's re- cent run of Tribute. House Deep Cove will stage Beyond Therapy again on Saturday, May 28. Friday will be a vanety night with two plays and a musical presentation. The plays will be Cobbler, Stick to Thy Last, by the West Vancouver Little Theatre, and Porch by the Langley Players.Cobbler, Stick to Thy Last was also an entry in the North Shore Festival. Director Des Price will bring the play to the Victoria festival, where it will be one of several plays to be shown free at an outdoor stage in Centennial Square. (Another festival entry, Candy Case by the Sunshine Coast Players, will also be performed there). Porch was the winner of the Lower Fraser Valley theatre zone festival last month. It is directed by Mar- tin Millerchip of North Van- couver, and will be the Lower Fraser Valley entry in the main festival in Victoria. Tickets to the benefit will cost $5 for each night, and unlike other events, no com- plimentary tickets will be given out, Lafleur says. Tickets will be available in advance from the Queen's Cross neighborhood pub, McNews, and Dino's Place restaurant. Lafleur says several firms and organizations = are donating their time or ser- vices to the benefit so that Presentation House will face no bills from the event. Besides the performances, there will be raffle uckets sold, with prizes of a dinner and a stay at a hotel (both donated), she says. “We want to preserve Presentation House,” Lafleur says, because it is the major showcase on _ the North Shore for the com- munity theatre groups. In February it looked like Presentation House might not survive. Presentation House had to lay off staff, cancel a plann- ed Da Vinci exhibit, slash costs to the bone in order to prevent a loan being called in that month. Even now, though the future of the arts centre (it is used for art shows, meetings, displays, and other events besides plays) is less cloudy, there is still a large deficit to pay off, says Presentation House General Manager Bob Carey. Events such as the theatre group benefit and others scheduled will help ease that deficit and allow Presenta- tion House to use funds from its cash flow to prepare future shows. Other fund raising events planned to help ease the deficit include an open house in September. Carey says support from the community has been “ very encou ‘The community wants to see Presentation House sur- vive.” THE OPTICAL DEPARTMENT OF LONDON DRUGS PRICES CAN’T BE BEAT ? THE OPTICAL DEPT.
