(Ian Smith photo} CANADA OUTPACES U.S. IN GASOLINE CONSUMPTION Low costs mean bigger cars OTTAWA (UPC) - Canada has surpassed the United States in gasoline consumption for the first time in history because Americans have switched more rapidly to smaller, fuel-efficient cars, the Conference Board of Canada says,. Canadians are still en- joying gas-guzzling cars due to significantly lower prices for gasoline, the board said in its latest issue of Canadian Business Review. “Canada's love for the automobile has been an ongoing affair — at least according to gasoline consumption statistics,” the board said in the issue released Thursday. “Low prices are widely believed to be a prime reason for Canadians using more and more motor fuel. “In Canada over the past year, there has been a slow HOLLANDS AUTO REPAIR Carburetion Exhaust system General maintenance Let me be your personal mechanic 830 W. 1st St. Just southeast of Woolco 988-5010 Marine Ov Hollands WwW tat movement to smaller cars but the switch has not been as dramatic as the rush for compact and subcompact autos south of the border.” According to board economist David Murrell, Canada has overtaken its southern neighbor in per capita gasoline consumption for the first time in history. Murrell cited figures compiled by Statistics Canada showing Canadians use moro than 360 imperial gallons of gasoline per capita each year, while con- sumption by U. S. motonsts dropped by more than 33 gallons per person last year to 330 gallons. “It's pretty surprising,” he said in an interview. “In the U.S., the number of buyers of small compacts has risen dramatically while medium and large cars have fallen off.” Changes driving in buying and behaviour by Americans were directly related to rapidly rising gasoline prices tn the United States, Murrcll said. He said the huge price hikes were attributed to ever-rising prices charged by OPEC and to President Jimmy Carter's energy price de-control program last year. Murrrell’s report said continued low prices for gasoline would lessen the “impetus” for companies to conduct research into other fuel-saving technology, including the development of gasohol and urban transportation. “Given consumer and voter preferences for cheap gasoline, the question should be asked as to whether Canadians really want to curb their growing use of motor fuels,” the report said. Gas rationing coming? CALGARY (UPC) .- Canada could face gasoline Tahoning within weeks or months if the war between Iran and Iraq leads to a blockade of the = strategic shipping waters of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, Alberta Energy Minister Merv Leitch said Wednesday “There ts an agreement between all of consuming navons that af there asa shortfall of of, at) will be shared by all.” Leitch told reporters after addressing the Canadian Petroleum Tan Society Leitch said if supplies through the Gulf are cut off, oil-consuming nations would receive one-third tess oil cach day. “We're importing 15 per cent of Canada’s oil and when we aren't receiving some of this, we'll have to cut down some place. So we're running a very high nsk of rationing ~ Is fimess Lmportant? Ask any body. mS) PARK SHORE MOTORS HAS MOVED!
