Thai pirates
terrorizing
refugees

GENEVA, Switzerland
(UPI) - The league of Red
Cross Societies said Thai
pirates are robbing, raping
and killing large numbers of
Vietnamese boat people
each month. ‘

“Reports from surviving
refugees indicate the pirates
mass rape, rob and kill
victims by throwing them
overboard, League
Secretary-General Henrik
Beer told a news conference.

“Although the situation in
Southeast Asia has stabilized
considerably, thousands of
refugees are still leaving
Vietnam in smail, un-
seaworthy vessels together
with their most valuable
possessions and so fall easy
prey to pirates,” Beer said.

Beer said an estimated 50
per cent of the boats arriving
from Vietnam had been
attacked, some _ several
times, but gave no indication
of the numbers involved.

The League is not sure of
the exact identity of the
pirates, who could be Thai
or Malay according to
refugees who say they
disguise themselves as
fishermen.

The League fears the
situation may soon
deteriorate as more refugees
are expected to arrive in the
area now that the monsoon
season has ended, = sub-
stantially increasing
