Our recent expedition to Cypress Provincial Park brought back happy memories of what it was like to travel to this slightly more than 5,250 acres of ski fun land before the advent of modern highways and paved access roads. . It was early-to-rise and a hearty breakfast in Vancou- ver. In those days, oatmeal porridge and other similar victuals constituted a good breakfast. If we. were lucky, mother would get up and prepare breakfast and a lunch packet, if we were off on a day trip to Hollyburn | Ridge and West Lake in what is now Cypress Provincial Park. If it was an overnight visit or longer, then, of course,: there would be the packing of a rucksack with appropriate food and other necessities. BOARDING THE FERRY Next, it was down to. catch the old number three street- car at Main Street and Twenty-ninth Avenue, usual- ly before the break of dawn. A half-hour’s, rattling trip downtown and a short walk down Hastings Street brought us to the ferry dock at the foot of Columbia Street where we _ boarded the Bonnabelle, or the West Vancouver Ferry Number Two. Then, with a toot of the whistle, we were off on a ‘voyage to Ambleside Dock in ‘West Vancouver, through the First Narrows of Burrard Inlet under the recently- — Gate . completed Bridge. Lions In West Vancouver we had a choice: take the blue bus as far uphill as it went towards Hollyburn Ridge, or, as was often the case when there wasn’t sufficient silver in our jeans, to throw the packsacks on our backs and start off for the mountain that loomed to the north. HOURS TO REACH SLOPES Whichever way we went, it was a few hours from the time we left home until we were on the ski slopes of Hollyburn Ridge. Today, you can be on the alpine slopes of Cypress, the nordic trails of Hollyburn, or the hiking of Yew Lake in minutes from nearly any- where in the Lower Main- land. “Park to themselves. The cross-country skiing at riouyouin is better. than it ever was. There are miles of. trails, each a challenge to the novice, intermediate, or..ad- vanced skier. Cross-country ‘was the only kind of skiing when we used to go to Hollyburn. No lifts, tows, or mechanically- -groomed slopes... _just trails through the forests. | Alpine enthusiasts have an area of Cypress Provincial The downhill .area,; opened early in 1976, with its two chairlifts and one rope tow, _was’an instant success. The announcement, that there was snow and that the chair and tow were in operation, had hardly been made before ardent skiers were lining.up. Soon the slopes were echoing cut) to the swish of skis and the approving comments of the aipine skiing fraternity. ALPINERS, NORDICS Like the alpiners, the - nordic skiers were out in force at Hollyburn. They had enjoyed a year’s headstart on the alpiners and were every ‘ bit.as happy with their kind of skiing. Not. forgotten are the people, young and not-so- young alike, _ toboggan or iust play in the snow. There are slopes for who like to them handy to the Hollyburn ‘cross-country ski trails. The park also caters to summer visitors. Trails have been established so that they may hike through the quiet forest. And, of course, there is the spectacular scenery. It was there when the streetcar, the ferry and the foot were the way to Cypress Provincial Park. It is. still there today. MULTI-HUED CARPET From the access road and -Hollyburn Ridge, Vancouver “and the Lower Mainland spreads like a multi-hued carpet before the viewers’ eyes. a At night the view — is. transformed into a fairyland of twinkling lights.- Even more , spectacular are. the _views from the summits of Black Mountain and Mount Strachan. An added bonus is the view westward over Howe Sound and to the sea of mountains that flows end- lessly to the north. As we stated at the start, our visit to Cypress was like some of the ‘‘expotitions’’ of Winnie-the-Pooh and Tigger.
