chamber in an attempt to
regenerate some nerve cells,
The Ahrens have accommada-
tion until the end of March in
an apartment near the rehab
centre. But from March 31,
“they’re on their own,” said
family friend Allison
Rutherford.

“She relies on Rolf for full-
tine case. Mentally and physi-
cally, he’s doing everything for
ovo. Everything Alexis wants
or needs, he has to get.”

Now, Rutherford and her
mother June Whitlow — a
longtime fiend of Rolfs par-

ents — are organizing a
fundraiser to try and get the
money together for a wwo-hed-
room place on the North
Shore.

Thev hope to raise at least
enough for the Ahrens’ down

payment and the first vear of

their mortgage. Whitlow's
employer, Macdonald Realty in
Vancouver, has already agreed
to waive its fees once an apart-
ment is found.

There aren't too many
wheelchair-friendly apartments
around, bur Rolf’s dad has
some carpentry skills, and has
offered to lower the counter-
tops in the kitchen and make
nore room for the wheelchair
in the bathroom,

“It would just be ideal,”

said Rolf. “Phere’s a support
network for (Alexis) nearby .
she could prepare dinner, get
things for herself. We could
have more of a husband and
wile relationship, instead of a
wife-nurse relationship.”

The money to help pay for
Alexis’s medical equipment
came from the. citizens: of
‘Terrace, who raised $14,000
for the couple after they heard
about the accident.

Said Rutherford, “They
really do need the family "Sup
port on the North Shore.”

Those wishing to donate
funds towards the Ahrens’
North Shore apartment can do

account has been set up in the
name of Ahrens Trust.
