7 mailbox Let punishment fit the crime Dear Editor: Thanks are due to Doug Collins for telling us (through his article July 4) how it should be told; ‘the correct- ness of Capital Punishment for premeditated murder’. I don’t have to think twice to agree. What right has this Park Royal murderer to plan the killing of a Brink’s guard, and to carry it out so callous- ly as he took for his own, so- meone else’s money? We have been told statistics have proved that the death penalty does not deter. What statistics? How can Stalistics exist when the death penalty has not been law for many long years? How can it then be known that capital punishment does not work, when what is used as com- parisons to arrive at Statistics, are obviously opimons. Years are times of change; people have changed, crime has become more violent and daring, and the law now aids the criminal, not the inno- cent. It is now time to change the law to fit new times, and bring back the death penalty. One section of our society already believes in it - the in- mates of many prisons, themselves offenders, who judge their peers, and then administer the final judge- ment. However, often the perpetrator of some heinous crime is given protection from that judgement. Let the punishment fit the crime, and only then will ail things be equal. With elec- tions around the corner, is a chance to let all candidates know how you feel about this issue.
