- scholarships awarded MORE than 10,700 British Columbia stu- dents at the post-sec- ondary level will receive scholarships from the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation for the 1999-2000 aca- demic year. Jean C. Monty, chairman of the board, and Norman Riddell, executive director and chief executive officer of the foundation, announced the program recently in Onawa. The 10,769 Millennium Scholarships dedicated to British Coiumbia’s neediest students represent for the foundation an annual invest- ment of $36,793,500 in. the future. of the province's young people. Recipients will ¢ notified by mail in the - coming weeks of the scholar- ships, worth between $2,000 and $4,006 each. The recent announce- ment concludes one year of talks with provincial and ter- ritorial post-secondary edu- cation officials and marks the implementation of 12 agree- ments signed with nine provinces and three territo- rics. The agreements were negotiated with a view to complementing existing pro- grams and avoiding adminis- trative overlapping that could have resulted from the distribution of the new scholarships. Under the agreements, the provinces and territories are also assur- ing the foundation’s recipi- ents that their millennium scholarship will enhance their individual financial situation. The foundation has not yet concluded an agreement with the Quebec govern- ment. Riddell says the foun- dation hopes to reach an agreement soon, similar to the ones concluded across the coun “Our objective is to pro- vide Canadian students with additional financial assistance in the new millennium.
