The next few weeks will be busy and joyous times but ail the extra combustibles such as a Christmas tee, ornaments, decorations, wrapping paper, plus additional heat scurces like lights, extension cords, candies, and the parade of people going in and out of your home calls for more safety precautions. To hel make this holiday season safe and happy for you and your fantily, the Greater Vancouver Fire Protection Association offers the following checklist for home holiday safe- Select a fresh Christmas tree and greenery. Plan your family’s escape route iow before you need to get our under panicky and scary circumstances. If you have friends or relatives staying over, review your fire escape plan with them. Keep decorations away from the kitchen stove, fireplace, docrways, stairways or other major walking paths and or escape routes. If necessary don your smoke hood or go down your escape ladder and call for iclp from a neighbour’s home. @ Keep candles and other open flames away from decorations. Never leave burning candles unattended and always super- vise children when using can- dies. Keep your wood stove docr closed and your fireplace screened. Make sure you keep your firebox clean and have your chimney cleaned anaually y a quatified professional. Make sure that your Christmas stockings are not hung directly above the fire. @ Inspect all wiring on holiday lights. Defective, worn or frayed electrical wiring should be discarded.
