The GVRD board voted unanimously ata meeting Wednesday to inform the province that a “significant amendment of replacement of the Amending Indensure Agreement” was required. The Amending Indenture Agreement, signed in! to the 1923 Watershed Leasing Agreement berween the G province. It was conceived in the belief that selective logging, or “forest man- agement” helped preserve water quality. “That belief” said GVRD communications officer Bill Morrell ina starement issued shortly after Wednesday’s meeting, “was proven to be inconsistent with the latest scientific evidence and with current public views. Although there has been ae active logging in the watersheds since 199}, the Amending Indenture requires GVRD staff to produce an annual forest management plan to the provinee, and in theory allows for the continuation of logging for profit. Environmentalist activists like Paul Hundal of SPEC (Seciety for Promotion of Environmental Protection) have campaigned vigorously for the removal of the Amending Indenture.
