a Dear Editor: A leer from the Elphinstone Community fe Association (ECA) begs comment. This group has made a decision on the Westcoast Gas LNG Storage Facility proposal based on Westcoast’s very polished public rela- y tions presentation and on their proposal docu- mentation. The latter warrants critical study and much reading berween the lines. Many aspects of their various studies warrant critical exploration and interpretation. The ECA letter states that Westcoast pro- Mm vided “detailed technical information with ‘Fespect to earthquakes attributed to the pro- posed site which has revealed that none of the recent quakes were remotely near the proposed Ree sitc.” . This region had two significant earthquakes Bin 1997: why would McNab Creek have been isolated from them? Did Westcoast have seis- mic instrumentation on the site? Currently, the B.C. Utilities Commission is considering proposals from eight gas compa- E nies, only one of which will be approved. _As the other proposals are for distant facili- ties, why would the ECA expect the propo- nents to visit the Sunshine Coast? 3: Referring to remarks regarding Lions Bay ‘and its mayor, Brenda Broughton, the f Elphinstone letter contains several misin- formed statements. Mayor Broughton does not rant. At no time has she raised her voice or made ill- informed statements. She has never raised con- cerns regarding visibility. The facility would not be in the view line of Lions Bay. fe ... Broughton is the spokesman for protest to the Westcoast proposal because she is so pro- 4 foundly informed. She has expert back-up ‘from within and beyond her community. Friday, January 23, 1998 — North Shore News - 9 north shore news MAIL BOX 5 Proper plan needed for Keep your mind on the road SH. Sound development She speaks for people well beyond the envi- rens of Lions Bay, which could be confirmed by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, who have had to hire extra staff to deal with the protest mail. The bottom line for objectors to the Westcoast proposal is that there is no long- term development plan for Howe Sound. It “is an area of outstanding natural beauty and, as such, must not be developed in a piecemeal fashion. The people of the Sunshine Coast deserve better than an industrial quick-fix tor their unemployment woes. This facility would provide only 12 full-time positions and wo years of possible minor con- struction jobs: Westcoast will bring in its own contractors for major construction work. For this pittance, Howe Sound (a high hazard seis- mic zone) would become home to the largest LNG storage tank in the world and the resi- dents of Howe Sound would be put at risk. A more imaginative approach to employ- ment is needed for the Howe Sound region. Eco-tourism, recreation and_ residential development have huge potential, which would be negatively impacted by the further industrialization of these shores. We are approaching the millennium and we need a new shared vision; blueprints for the future which acknowledge our evolution from the Dark Ages of industrialization, when cnviron- mental impact was of little concern. (Jan. 16 Close to Home column). The fact that this particular school zone belonged to Westcor elemen- tary, where her very own chil- dren had attended und just last year, appalls me even more. Ms. Humphreys owes an apology to every child at Westcot for endangering their lives as she passe, through their school zone. She owes an apology to ali other road users as she “checks out and goes someplace ese in her head, and doesn’t really pay attention to road signs or any- thing else for that matter, on her regular route.” Ms. Humphreys, please call me next time you leave home. I sympathize deeply with Ms. Humphreys for being so unfortunate as to be pulled over by a “rall, lanky, and thorough- ly lovely police girl,” “a striking young thing, a Cindy Crawford Qype, only more clean-cut look- ing in her police officer’s uni- form.” Such a pity that she was- n’t able to “bat her cyelashes and get away with a warming and a friendly wink.” Ms. Humphreys also owes an apology to all police officers keep her mind where it belongs . on the road.
