a URC student who relied on the old No.
286 and is fess than pleased with its can-
cellation.

approximate 45 minutes to two hours
each day.

“This is certainly discouraging and
seems almost cruel in the context of the
students returning late and having to
make several changes, particularly in win-
ter,” stated Virmani.

’BC Transit spokesman Trace Acres
said he is aware of some of the complaints
regarding the replacement service.

“The No. 44 has not been as reliable
as we have hoped it would be,” said
Acres.

bus service plied the highlands route

along Delbroo< to Montroyal, through
Edgemont and on ro Capilano Read.
After crossing the Lions Gate Bridge, it
became an express bus all the way to
UBC.

Acres added BC Transit is in the
process of making some changes.

“Hopefully within the next two weeks
we'll sce some improvements,” said
Acres, “We are working very hard right
now to improve the No. 44.”

He said areas being addressed include
better connections with the SeaBus and
other buses running through downtown.

But most UBC commuters appear to
be holding out for the reinstatement of
the original No. 286 service.

“The fact that there is a demand
seems certainly clear enough,” said
Virmani. “It certainly cannot be the
objective that desires of people and a
consequent demand be completely
ignored.”

Acres said there are no plans to rein- -
- troduce the No. 286 bus.
