Minister Allan Rock’s proposed new
legislation which bear some scrutiny.

1970s the government of the day
amended the Criminal Code with a

section which stated anyone who.

used a firearm in the commission of
a crime would be subject to a mini-
mum sentence of one year in jail in

Justice is not something to be bar-
gained away by lawyers. The credo
of western democracies is that justice
must not only be done, but it must be
seen to be done. All the Justice
Minister has accomplished with this
part is to provide the Crown lawyers
a somewhat larger bargaining chip.

This is not gun control legislation
as it is termed. All of the. minister's
efforts to sell this package of panty-
waisted ideas should be roundly and
soundly decried by all Canadians.
The government must be given the
message in terms they understand.

The only way such amendments
to the Criminal Code will have any
effect.is to take away the power of
the Crown to bargain away justice.
Equally, specific minimum sentences

- must be put in place to ensure judges

no longer fritter away. their golden

years on the law benches of Canada, -

rendering decisions which defy
logic, real justice or the wishes of the
Canadian People. .
