West Van clubhouse noted for refinement Fram page 17 second-floor framing. The architects installed timber frames and purlins to carry the roof loads, leaving the orig- inal rafters exposed as ceiling finish. The jury enjoyed the result, describing the renovation as “very competently handled.” The smallish renovation of the clubhouse of the West Vancouver Yacht Club by David Weiser Architect of West Vancouver pleased the jury for its “level of sophistication and refinement, a small project with high esthetic value.” The renovation included a new entrance lobby and canopy all con- structed and finished with wood products. Low cost, availability and ease of use made wood the best choice of material, a medium han- dled with skill and taste. The firm, Farouk Noormohamed Architect, garnered the final Merit Award for the Lions Gate Ismali Centre in West Vancouver. The project is a case study of wood as pure decoration, in this example as embellishment of a mun- dane steel building that once served as aftennis club. The budget did not allow for re-chidding the building so the architect reduced the building scale by applying wood lattice bands to the exterior and by erecting a series of portal frames covered with intricate wood lattice, Traditional decorative Islamic surface treatments culminate in the interior wall panels of Douglas-fir lattice, The jury found the project “beau- tiful and elegant in its use of wood, and restrained in its representation of the building's significance.” The Wood Design Awards Program encourages excellence in building design using wood, the only renewable building product. In awarding the work of architects, the program acknowledges their signifi- cant contributions to our society. The Canadian Wood Council is the national association representing the Canadian wood products indus- try. For more information cal] D.L. Griffith or R.G. LeVasseur at 1-800- 463-5091, (613) 731-7800. All the Union Steamship cabins were erected through the winter. From the summer of 1920, my family rented this cabin every summer through the mid-60s when it was purchased by the three Poole sisters and their hus- bands. The Poole grandparents were deceased then, but their daughters and their husbands, with their chil- dren, continued to enjoy this family legacy. “Now in the 1990s the fifth gen- eration children of Clarence and Henrietta Poole are very much a part of Bowen Island.” 1 Come in today! 2 WEEKS BEVELED GLASS DINING FIXTURE #8 lights + 1 down fight 15 59 ___SALE WILLIAMSBURG DINING FIXTURE * polished brass 8 ABD * square arm LARGEST SELECTION OF TIFFANY IN TOWN! *16"- 4 Diameter From 158 eighty BE featy aelin RON | Clear Sparkle lucite ps | CHANDELIER ou 9 ° 38” Gust over 2nd Narrows Bridge) ‘comer of Hastings & Nanaimo turn right at Hastings Watch a practical family movie WONDERING WHICH video to choose for the family to watch?
