2 - Sunday, July 17, 1994 - North Shore News N. Van family dies in U.S. triple slaying THE INVESTIGATION of the murder of a family from No.ta Vancouver is continuing in Bellevue, Washington. By Kate Zimmerman News Reporter The bodies of civil engineer Tariq Rafay, 56, and his wife Sultana, in her 5Gs, were discovered along with their badly wounded 21-year-old daughter Basia by their son early Wednesday morning. Basma Jater died of her injuries in hospital. Tariq was a prominent member of Vancouver's Pakistani community for a decade, and a past-president of the Pakistan-Canada Friendship Society. The family had moved from North Vancouver to Bellevue, a quiet suburb of Seattle with a popu- lation of 100,000, just over a year ago. As of Friday, according to police spokesman Lieut. Jack McDonald. Bellevue investigators had no sus- pects in the case, nor had they ruled anyone out. Though investigators are explor- ing the possibility of robbery as a motive, McDonald said nothing obvious seemed to be missing from the house. The possibility of a racial or reli- gious motivation for the killings has not been discounted, he added, but there was no evidence to suggest either one. “We haven't shut the door on anything,” McDonald said. The murder weapon has not been found, either. “We don’t know what we're looking for at this point.” said McDonald.
