Ae Yes and Yes. Radial tires most definitely need rotating and there are differences between front ® wheel drive (FWD) and rear wheel drive (RWD) wear paiterns. Froni wheel drive cars wear the front tires much faster than the rears. This is because the front wheels provide the steering, acceleration and most of the braking. Having said this, the trailing rear tires are Le ee offen prone to cupping or uneven fire wear. It is not uncommon to wear out the front fires in 15- DOUG FERGUSSON 20,000 km, if they are not rotated. While there may be plenty of tread left on the rears, the wear pat- tern may be such that they are unuseable on the front. Rear wheel drive cars tend to wear the rear tires faster than the fronts, but this wear difference is nowhere neor as pro- nounced as in FWD cars. Rotating the tire: simply means moving a tire from one corner of the car to another. This is to ensure all tires wear evenly and at the same rate. Tires that are rotated regularly will last up to 25% longer and are safer to drive on. Front wheel: drive cars should have the tires rotated as often as every 8,000 km, while RWD cars should have tires rotated every 10-12,000 km: Many tire retailers such as KAL TIRE provide free tire rotation at the r recom- mended intervals, There are a number of rotation patterns you can use. The simplest is the X rotation where each tire is moved diagonally. On FWD cars, KAL TIRE recommends mov- ing the front tires to the same side rear and the rear tires diagonally to the front. On RWD cars the rear tires are moved to the same side front and the fronts are moved diagonally to the rear. These patterns ensure that each tire finds its way to'each corner. if in doubt, consult a reputable tire dealer.
