MAILBOX Treat all equally Dear Editor: I} am convinced the aboriginal cause has been greatly advanced over the course of the referendum debates. However, the current po- litical approach to the issue raises some profound questions for all Canadians. 1 read in a recent column by Bob Hunter in the North Shore News where he referred to there being over 600 separate aboriginal bands in Canada. If this is the case then it brings into sharp focus the need for aboriginal self-government to be well-defined both in terms of what exactly it means and what it will cost the Canadian taxpayer. When Chief Mercredi and others talk about nation-to-nation negotiations, all | see is a map of Canada riddled with holes like a giant Swiss cheese. A united Canada has room for everyone in it to be unhyphenated Canadians, yet to enjoy their diverse cultural backgrounds. Politicians have turned Canada into one of the largest debtor na- tions in the industrialized world. Canadian taxpayers cannot be asked to write any more blank cheques. Canadians want each citizen, aboriginal or non-aboriginal, to have the same access to health care, individual rights and freedoms, economic opportunity and standard of living. To achieve these goals I expect there must be more integration with the existing governmental structures in Canada, not less as some leaders claim. The high-minded rhetoric of all political leaders during the refer- endum may have been good for the Canadian psyche, however impractical in content. Now someone has to find an affordable, workable, and fair solution to help our aboriginal friends achieve their legitimate needs within Canada. David B.
