3 - Sunday, November 13, 1988 — West Vancouver Villager Council votes for library expansion WEST VANCOUVER’S ‘‘dream library’’ is now a possibil- ity, thanks to West Vancouver District Council’s Oct. 24 decision to begin accumulating funds for a further expan- sion of the facility. Raising the funds for the pro- ject, with an estimated final cost of $4.7 million, will be a daunting task, bu: council has started things off by committing an annual con- tributior of $400,000 for the next few years, to the cause. Although some of the money may be acquired from fedcral and provincial sources, the rest will have to be raised in the communi- ty. By MAUREEN CURTIS Villager Reporter 7 “Public responses have been very favorable to the need for ex- pansion,*’ Mounce said recently. ' Utilization of what has frequent- ly been called North America’s busiest library has also continued to grow — by more than 25 per cent in the 1980s alone. Staff are working under crowd- ed conditions, and some materials have been moved to offsite storage at Hillside Secondary. Although many details of the expansion have yet to be worked out, the project will likely begin with the replacement of the cast children’s wing with a four-storey structure that will take better ad- vantage of the site. The new wing will likely incor- porate two floors below ground level and one above. Working around the construc- tion will be difficult, though Mounce has worked out a plan that would involve moving. the : ohare Noll Lucente JACK MOUNCE, chief librarian for West Vancouver Memorial Library, indicates an area of the library that is due to be renovated. West Vancouver council recently voted to contribute $400,000 annually for the next few years to the library's expansion fund. The total cost of the expansion will be $4.7 million.
