Shore residents to participate in European | UN peacekeeping duties. §_—-——----- FIVE NORTH Shore members of the 6th Field Engineer squadron have been selected for United Nations (UN) peacekeeping duty in the former republic of Yugoslavia. The North Shore personnel who will be dispatched to the war-torn area are Sgt. Darcy Fysh, Master Cpl. Sam Demopoulos, Master Cpl. Bryan Couch, Cpl. Grant Fraser and Sapper Jason Geiger. They will be joined by Sapper Elisabeth Mortlock of Vedder Crossing. All six will be attached to No. 1 Combat Engineer Regiment of Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack for the duration of their deploy- ment. Advance units have already left for the Balkans, and the main party left B.C. on Oct. 6. ae a ae The regiment has UN experi- ence, having returned from a tour voy in Kuwait in October L. Four other members of the 6th Field Engineer Squadron have al- ready been attached to 3rd Bat- talion Princess Patricia’s Cana- dian Light Infantry for the same operation: Master Cpl. Cameron Stephen, Cpl. Angeline Geiger and Cpl. Darrylt Newsham from the North Shore. The fourth member is Cpl. Lauren Skibinsky from Vedder Crossing. This is the first time in the 6 Field Squadron’s history that fe- male members have been sent into a possible combat situation. Another first in the history of the unit is that a brother and sister, Cpl. Angeline Geiger and Sapper Jason Geiger of the North Shore, have been sent overseas. The contingent is expected to return next April.
