saw and were seen at the Indy

FASHION AT the Indy? This is a joke, right? No joke.
Last weekend’s third annual Molson Indy may not have
been the Paris Collections but it did bring out Van-
couverites with a certain sense of style. What emerged
from the sea of baseball caps and Porsche sungiasses were

three distinct profiles of the fashionable Indy-goer:

RACERS
(Richly Accessorized Car-minded
Enthusiastic Race-goers)

Usually guests at one of the In-
dy’s numerous ccrporate spon-
sors, RACERs sport serious race
garb — colorful nylon racing
jackets, logo-laden T-shirts, and
baseball caps emblazoned with the
names and symbols of every con-
sumer product from motor oil to
toilet paper.

* You name it, they’ve got it —
including a highly coveted seat in
_ the $150 gold section and vIP pit

REVs see the Indy as the social
event of the season. They are just

as interested in the dizzying round
of pre-Indy galas, lunches and
brunches as they are in the race
day itself.

Usually pledging allegiance to
one racer or another — Van-
couver driver Ross Bentley is a
favorite — they outfit themselves
in their driver’s colors.

REVs like to be at the centre of
activity and are adept at finessing
their way into the pit or into one
of the $20,600 corporate suites at
the start/finish line.

WHEELs
(Well-Heeled Engine-iiliterate Ex-
citement Lovers)

These fashionably attired race-
goers don’t care a_ sparkplug
about the actual race. For all they
know about racing, the hairpin
turn could be a new way to coif
their tresses anc Mario Andretti
an Italian menswear designer.

The excitement generated by the
race is what attracts them to the
Indy. Spurning a seat on the
start/finish fine, WHEELs will
seek out the perfect spot to see
and be seen.

REVS WEAR their favorite driver’s colors.
