in artificial conditions

are minimal, statistics show that it
does happen to thousands of peo-
ple across North America every
year,

Other safety devices, such as
traction control and all-wheel
drive, also require hands-on prac-
tice to be effective. Traction con-
trol uses the anti-lock brake sen-
sors to prevent the driving wheels
from spinning under acceleration,
particularly on icy or wet surfaces.

One of its major benefits is im-
proving steering control by in-
creasing the grip of the driving
wheels. Again, traction control
should be experienced under ar-
tificial test conditions. before it is
. experienced in real-life situations
where ignorance could be costly.

All-wheel drive is one of the
more benign technologies available
because it does practically
everything: itself. The most
sophisticated systems automatical-
ly apportion power to the wheel
or wheels that have the most trac-
tion. This gives significantly im-
proved safety and go-anywhere
capability in ice and snow, mud or
gravel conditions.

The one drawback, from a driv-
ing point of view, is thet drivers
tend to get overconfident and
make mistakes. The system is bet-
ter than front-wheel-drive or
rear-wheel-drive, but it is not in-
fallible. :

In fact, all of the aforemen-
tioned safety technologies are only
as smart as the driver is. To take
advantage of the additional safety
benefits, drivers need to under-
stand. how the systems work, in
theory and in practice.

@ North Vancouver District:
Prospect Road: Rockland Road to
Newdale Court: Watermain
replacement. Traffic control in
place.

Mount Seymour Parkway: Apex
Road to Roche Point: Watermain
installation in north lanes. Expect
some delays westbound.

Pavement rehabilitation projects
will also be carried out at the fol-
lowing areas:

Fairway Drive-Dollar Road south
to end.

Bushnell Piace-Ross Road south.
Delbrook Avenue-Cartelier Street

to Montroyal Blvd.

@ North Vancouver City:
scheduled road closures
detours.

@ West Vanccuver District:
scheduled road closures
detours.

@ Ministry of Highways:

Highway 99 north: There will be
single-lane alternating traffic with
delays up to 20 minutes 1[6
kilometres north of Horseshoe
Bay at Loggers Creek from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays
and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on
Fridays until Aug. 28.

There will also be single-lane
alternating traffic at Murin Park
Mondays to Fridays from 7:30
a.m. to 4 p.m. until July 17.
